Johanna Leung is an active clarinettist based in Manchester. She graduated with Master of Performance and Bachelor of Music in the Royal Northern College of Music, studied clarinet performance with Antonio Salguero, Chris Swann, Sarah Watts and Nicholas Cox.
Johanna has participated in various orchestral project such as side by side Professional Experience Scheme with The Halle Orchestra. She has performed with a range of ensembles including the Northern Film Orchestra, UnHeard Orchestra, CoMA Manchester, RNCM New Music Wind Ensemble, RNCM Symphony Orchestra, RNCM Opera and Opera Shack. She has given solo and chamber recitals in various venues including the Manchester St Ann's Church, Didsbury Emmanuel Church and Lancaster Priory. As the core member of Subito Ensemble and The Sonix Duo, Johanna has been invited to various high-profile festivals including GAIA Festival of The Earth and The Sound of Contagion (collaborative project between the University of Oxford and the University of Arts, Berlin).
From early success with the 66th Hong Kong School Music Festival solo clarinet competition, Johanna later achieved 2nd prize in the senior solo category of the 2019 Buffet Crampon Clarinet Competition and Help Musician Postgraduate Award 2020.
Johanna has participated in master classes with various international artists such as Walter Seyfarth from the Berlin Philharmonic, Oliver Patey from the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, John Campbell, Florent Heau, Jean-Marc Volta, Jorge Montilla, Karel Dohnald, Erik Adamski, Randovan Cavallin Zerjal, Paolo de Gaspari and Gabor Valgar.
As a contemporary music specialist, Johanna is particularly interested in collaborating with different musicians, composers and artists. She has been collaborating with various local composers on commissioned compositions, and commercial recordings as well as hosting collaborative events. Johanna enjoys exploring the extreme of the instrument and her personal capability.
Johanna is the organizer and manager of several projects such as Subito Ensemble: Subito Festival (annual event showcasing collaborative highlights throughout the year typically involving dancers, poets, painters, filmmakers, photographers, lighting designers, actors and artificial intelligence), 'StART Entrepreneurship' (multi-university collaborative program involving multi-disciplinary concerts), Sonix Duo: What on Earth (concert series for The Wildlife Trust), The Possible Sound Project (contemporary music workshops and concerts for local primary schools) and Concert Series for People with Disabilities.
